What's in a shot of Espresso?

Almost everyone has tried or is drinking coffee on a daily basis. But do you know what actually is in a regular cup of joe?

People consume their coffee from a variety of sources. Some people purchase their own coffee beans and brew them at home while others prefer the convenience and get their caffeine doses from a nearby Starbucks or preferred café. A normal cup of coffee contains, on average, about 95mg of caffeine while a shot of espresso contains about 63mg of caffeine.

Now your mileage might vary based on these following factors:

  1. Type of coffee bean
  2. Roasting
  3. Type of coffee - regular brew, espresso, instant or decaf.
  4. Serving size.

But today we're here to share with you on the more specific and widely available coffee, the Espresso.

Espresso is what you get when you force a small amount of nearly boiling water under pressure through finely grounded coffee beans. This can be obtained either from the very popularised Nespresso machine and their little capsules (it works almost the same way) or a piece of more specialised equipment such as coffee machines with Nespresso systems inbuilt (think those huge chunks of metal machinery behind the Starbucks counter).

After getting a shot of espresso, the ingredients that come after are what gives the cup of coffee its fancy name. For example:

  • Caffè Macchiato / Espresso Macchiato / Macchiato - Espresso with milk foam.
  • Caffè Latte - Espresso with more steamed milk and lesser milk foam.
  • Cappuccino - Espresso with equal amounts of steamed milk and milk foam.
  • Caffè Mocha - Espresso with chocolate syrup, steamed milk, and whipped cream.

And there you have it. The various types of espresso presented to you with as little fuss as possible. To appeal to the younger crowd of the public (do it for the Gram?), people beautify their cup of cappuccino or frappuccino with other ingredients such as caramel or raspberry syrup.
